Committed to coral reef conservation, the FKP Unud research team conducts monitoring and research on coral reef health in the North Bali ICRG area

The government launched the National Economic Recovery (PEN) Coral Reef Restoration Labour Intensive Programme (ICRG)/ PEN-ICRG (Indonesia Coral Reef Garden) as an effort to improve the economy in Bali last 2020. This activity is the largest Coral Reef restoration activity ever carried out in Indonesia. Specifically in the North Bali area, no less than 850 structures including Crocodile Bread, Fish Dome, Statues and Earth Pegs were lowered along the North Bali coast, starting from the Les area (Tejakula) to the Lovina area (Buleleng).
On Saturday, 23 September 2023, in collaboration with the Kertha Winangun Community Supervisory Group (POKMASWAS) Pacung Village, the Faculty of Marine and Fisheries (FKP) Udayana University led by Dr. Dwi Budi Wiyanto (Chief Researcher) and Putu Satya Pratama Atmaja, M.Si (Research Member) as well as several students who are members of the Bharuna Scientific Diving Club conduct periodic research related to the health and survival of coral reefs in the North Bali ICRG coral transplantation area.

Separately, Dr Dwi Budi Wiyanto said that monitoring the health and success of coral life is very necessary to be done regularly. "The existence of scientifically valid data can be the basis for determining the success of large projects such as ICRG, which has a very noble goal in maintaining the sustainability of marine ecosystems," he added.
Monitoring was carried out for 2 days (23 - 24 September 2023) covering the coastal areas of North Bali, starting from Les Paradise site (Tejakula), Sasahan Beach (Bondalem), to Penimbangan Beach (Buleleng). According to Mr Nyoman Putra, as Chairman of POKMASWAS Pacung Village, the strong desire to restore and preserve coral reefs must be accompanied by regular monitoring and evaluation to make it more effective. "Collaboration is key, FKP Unud as an organiser of higher education in the field of marine and fisheries needs to be highly appreciated because it has periodically gone directly to monitoring" he concluded.
It has been 3 years since the ICRG project was launched, the expected output is in addition to the success of growing coral reefs, the community as the main spearhead can maintain and care for the ICRG coral garden that has been built and can reap the benefits both directly and indirectly.
