Providing a Platform for Divers to Learn Fish and Coral Data Collection and Processing at Jemeluk Beach, Amed, BASIC Udayana Organizes the 2024 “Melali Sambil Melajah” Event in Collaboration with Lini Foundation

The Melali Sambil Melajah (MSM) 2024 event, organized by the Baruna Scientific Diving Club (BASIC Udayana), aims to introduce participants to coral reefs and reef fish, helping divers understand the conditions of coral reefs and fish populations through specific indicators. Each indicator is assessed using relevant methods, such as the Underwater Photo Transect (UPT) method for corals and the Underwater Visual Census (UVC) method for reef fish. In addition to educational purposes, MSM also aims to showcase and explore the beauty of Jemeluk Beach, Amed.

Running from September 16 to 24, 2024, MSM began with an opening ceremony and a presentation by Lini Foundation, followed by a data collection demonstration and equipment fitting session. The next day was dedicated to data collection at Jemeluk Beach, Amed, Karangasem. Six active students from the Faculty of Marine and Fisheries at Udayana University participated in this event: four collected data on coral reefs, while two focused on reef fish data. The next stage, held on September 23–24 at the Samudra Building, FKP Unud, involved data processing and presentation, culminating in a closing ceremony to mark the end of the event.

In his opening remarks, Gandhi Bintang Alhafsy, the 2024 Chair of BASIC Udayana, stated, “The Melali Sambil Melajah event is designed not only as an exciting exploration of ocean diving but also as an opportunity to hone our diving skills and deepen our knowledge and understanding of marine ecosystem data collection.” Through Melali Sambil Melajah 2024, it is hoped that divers equipped with knowledge and skills related to coral reefs and their assessment methods can become valuable human resources contributing to the conservation and restoration of coral reef ecosystems.
