Udayana Mengabdi, Empowering Fisherwomen Group "Akshada Segara Putri", East Seraya Village

The Community Service Team (Pengmas) of Udayana University (Unud) conducted training on processing and packaging of processed tuna (Auxis Sp.) products to the Fisherwomen's Group "Akshada Segara Putri", East Seraya Village, Karangasem District, Karangasem Regency. The community service activity was held in Banjar Kangin, East Seraya Village, Saturday (19/8/2023).

Present at the activity was the Head of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries of Karangasem Regency represented by I Komang Kusuma Wijaya, S.Pi, representatives of the Head of East Seraya Village, Head of the Akshada Segara Putri Processing and Marketing Group, as well as a number of village officials, XXVIII Unud KKN PPM students, and Akshada Segara Putri community members.

The Head of the Unud Pengabdi Lecturer Team, Made Ayu Pratiwi, S.Pi, M.Si. said, Seraya Timur Village has become a pilot village for the fishery product development road map by the Faculty of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Udayana University. Ayu hopes that the community service activities carried out can benefit the community, especially in improving the welfare of local coastal communities.

In line with Ayu, this community service activity was welcomed by the East Seraya Village officials and the members of Akshada Segara Putri fisherwomen. I Gede Sutor, representing the Head of Seraya Timur Village, said he was happy with the implementation of this activity.

This community service activity was also coupled with the inauguration of the Akshada Segara Putri fisherwomen's group. The formation of this group originated from the initiative of fishermen's wives who wanted to contribute to the family economy. The philosophy of the group name Akshada Segara Putri means that behind the husband who goes to sea there are wives who always pray for safety and success.

Ni Wayan Sumartini Febriyanti, Head of the Akshada Segara Putri Processing and Marketing Group, said that the existence of the fisherwomen's group is expected to help the family economy. "During the famine, the family's economy is a little difficult, so we took the initiative to try to process the fish catch further," said Sumartini.

In order to succeed the Akshada Segara Putri community initiative, the Udayana University Community Service Team provided material exposure ranging from how to process tuna, packaging, marketing, to collaboration with other parties. The material session was directed by Ni Luh Gede Rai Ayu Saraswati as the moderator. Furthermore, the first speaker, I Wayan Darya Kartika, S.Pi., M.Si. presented material on how spoilage in captured fish products can occur and how better packaging and storage strategies.

According to him, East Seraya Village's tuna products are of good quality (grade A and B) and can actually be exported. However, good fish packaging techniques are important so that the quality of the fish can be maintained. "Fish can be packaged using vacuum techniques and frozen to last up to 3 months. This is important so that the economy of the fishing community remains good even during the lean season," she said.

Furthermore, Darya explained that the most important thing to maintain fish quality is to reduce the water content in the fish meat and prevent the product from being exposed to air. Other ways to package fish can be done by marination and drying.

The Pengmas Unud team also presented Desak Made Sriasih, S.TP. as Tulikup Village Facilitator for empowerment in the fisheries sector. Desak gave a presentation on examples of fisheries empowerment initiatives that have been carried out by the community in Tulikup Village. She explained that it is necessary to form a circular ecosystem from upstream to downstream in developing the village economy. In the upstream part, Tulikup Village empowers fisherwomen's groups to process catfish into various products such as seasoned fish, meatballs, and fish nuggets.

This processing is intended to make catfish products have a higher economic value and be able to support the welfare of the community, especially during the famine. The products are then frozen and can last up to 3-4 months. Downstream, the Tulikup Village fisherwomen's group works with BUMDes Jaya Winangun Sari to market the products. The BUMDes then helps buy from producers and further markets to consumers. In addition, the BUMDes also helps distribute fish products as PMT (Supplementary Feeding) food during village posyandu. Desak invited the Akshada Segara Putri group to collaborate with various parties to create a supportive ecosystem for marketing the superior products of East Seraya Village.
