"Diving While Drinking Water" UNISERF FKP UNUD Research Team in Nusa Lembongan

On Sunday, November 18, 2023, the UNISERF (University International Senior Researcher Fellowship) Research Team conducted Mangrove Clean UP (MCU) activities in Nusa Lembongan. The activity was led by Mr. I Wayan Gede Astawa Karang with a team of FKP UNUD students and also researchers from India, Basheer Ahammed KK. In the midst of a busy schedule of field observations in the Nusa Lembongan Mangrove Forest, the Research Team included an agenda to carry out environmental conservation activities, namely cleaning in the Mangrove Forest. This activity began at 09.00 Wita where the team walked through the mangrove forest to pick up plastic waste. This activity was carried out as a form of commitment of the academic community of FKP UNUD to preserve the environment, especially mangrove forests which are a stronghold of land strength from sea water abrasion. This activity is also expected to provide an example to the local community, the importance of protecting mangrove forests.

Quoting from the Ocean Concervancy report in 2022, the most waste found in coastal areas, such as mangrove forests, is food wrappers and plastic bottles. The waste comes to the coast through river flow, local community activities, and marine activities (Asensio-Motesinos et al, 2021). Plastic waste will parasitize the development and growth of various types of mangroves in the Nusa Lembongan Mangrove Forest. Evident from the results of the Clean Up activity, the dominating waste is plastic waste from food packaging and also beverage bottles. The activity ended at 12.00 Wita, the plastic waste that had been collected was immediately taken to the Final Disposal Site (TPA).
