Faculty of Marine and Fisheries Introduces Fish Feed Innovation Made from Mangosteen Peels at SD Negeri 1 Galungan
Buleleng, August 2, 2025 — The Faculty of Marine and Fisheries at Udayana University has once again demonstrated its commitment to supporting community food security through a community service activity held at SD Negeri 1 Galungan, Buleleng Regency. The event carried the theme “Demonstration and Socialization of Mangosteen Peel Utilization for Fish Feed Production”, aiming to introduce a natural and locally sourced alternative fish feed.
The event was attended by the Head of Galungan Village (Perbekel), the Director of the Village-Owned Enterprise (BUMDes), as well as the principal and teachers of SD Negeri 1 Galungan, all of whom expressed strong support for this educational initiative.
Students enthusiastically participated in both the informational session and the hands-on demonstration of how to process mangosteen peels into ready-to-use fish feed, guided by the community service team from the Faculty of Marine and Fisheries.
“Mangosteen peels, often considered waste, actually have great potential as raw material for economically valuable fish feed. We want students and the community to realize that they can produce their own feed that is cheaper, environmentally friendly, and easy to make,” said a member of the community service team.
In addition to the educational session, the event featured a live demonstration of the fish feed production process. At the end of the activity, the Faculty of Marine and Fisheries donated fish feed-making tools and mangosteen peel extract to the Galungan Village Government, BUMDes, and the school.
The initiative is expected to encourage local communities—especially the younger generation—to become self-sufficient in producing fish feed, while also opening up new economic opportunities through the utilization of local resources.
“We see great potential if this innovation can be managed by the village and BUMDes. It will not only support local aquaculture efforts but can also become a new business opportunity that drives the local economy,” stated a village representative in attendance.
Through this program, the Faculty of Marine and Fisheries continues to foster collaboration between academia, local government, and communities to develop sustainable, locally-based innovations.
