Community Service Program: Earthquake and Tsunami Disaster Mitigation Education in Karangasem

As part of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education and a form of academic social responsibility toward disaster-prone regions, a Community Service Program titled “Earthquake and Tsunami Disaster Mitigation Awareness” was successfully conducted in Karangasem Regency, Bali. The program took place over two days, from October 31 to November 1, 2025, focusing on disaster education for three coastal elementary schools in Manggis District, namely SD Negeri 1 Padangbai, SD Negeri 2 Padangbai, and SD Negeri 1 Ulakan.

This program was particularly special due to the collaboration between students from the Faculty of Marine and Fisheries (FKP) and the Faculty of Law (FH) at Universitas Udayana. The FKP team emphasized the scientific aspects of coastal disasters, such as recognizing natural warning signs of earthquakes and tsunamis related to coastal conditions, while the FH team focused on proper and organized evacuation procedures.

The activity was attended by nearly all students from the participating schools, with an average of 155 students per school, reaching a total of more than 465 students who received early disaster mitigation education. One of the key successes of the event was the high enthusiasm and engagement shown by the children. Students were very active and interactive, especially during the “drop, cover, and hold on” simulation and evacuation practice to the designated safe points.

Learning materials were tailored to the children’s age through educational games and songs, effectively turning a serious topic into a fun and memorable learning experience. This level of participation reflects the strong potential for fostering a culture of disaster preparedness from an early age.

Through this community service program, it is expected that awareness and preparedness—particularly within school communities—against potential earthquake and tsunami threats in the Karangasem coastal region of Bali will be significantly enhanced.
