Turning Awareness into Action: HIMASILA Hosts the 2025 Mangrove and Coral Reef Study Club (SCMTK)

Denpasar, 7 September 2025

The Marine Science Student Association (HIMASILA) of the Faculty of Marine and Fisheries, Udayana University, successfully held the 2025 Mangrove and Coral Reef Study Club (SCMTK) under the theme “From Awareness, To Action: Youth For Coastal Sustainability.” The two-day program was designed to transform knowledge into hands-on conservation action for first-year students.

A total of 78 first-year Marine Science students (Class of 2025) participated enthusiastically in activities focused on conserving coastal ecosystems—particularly mangroves and coral reefs.

Program Highlights

  • Saturday, 6 September 2025 — Mangrove Planting Kampoeng Kepiting, Tuban, Bali: nursery techniques, planting methods, and a brief discussion on mangroves’ role in shoreline protection and carbon sequestration.
  • Sunday, 7 September 2025 — Coral Reef Transplantation Pandawa Beach, Kutuh, Bali: substrate introduction, fragment attachment techniques, and initial post-transplant monitoring.

Advisor’s Remarks “What makes Udayana University special is how close our natural laboratories are—mangrove and coastal ecosystems. This proximity empowers students to learn, conduct research, and cultivate environmental stewardship. Through the 2025 Mangrove and Coral Reef Study Club, students can directly contribute to preserving coastal ecosystems.”

Impact and Outlook

Beyond practical skills in nursery management, planting, and mangrove conservation—as well as coral transplantation methods—students were encouraged to translate awareness into tangible action. The program is expected to become a sustained platform for nurturing maritime-minded, environmentally conscious students who are ready to play a pivotal role in safeguarding Indonesia’s coasts and oceans.
