Getting to Know the Marine Science Program at FKP UNUD: New Students Participate in Neptune's HIMASILA 2024 Activities.

To welcome new students of FKP UNUD in 2024, the Marine Science Student Association (HIMASILA) held the Neptune’s 2024 program under the theme, “From Land to the Sea: Shaping Resilient Marine Science Students with Leadership Skills and Dedication to the Ocean.” The Marine Science program covers a wide range of learning and includes various organizations within it, as well as higher-level academic opportunities. As we know, new students often lack knowledge and experience in the challenging world of university life, and this is especially true for those just joining the Marine Science program. Through the Neptune’s activities, new students are trained and taught various skills and disciplines (induction), providing them with enhanced abilities and knowledge compared to students who do not participate in the induction process.

Neptune’s 2024 involved members of the Marine Science Student Association of the Faculty of Marine and Fisheries at Udayana University, along with alumni and lecturers from the Faculty of Marine and Fisheries. The program ran from September 7 to 22, over six days across three weekends (Saturdays and Sundays) in September 2024, held at Batur Hall, Samudra Building, and on the second floor of Baronang Building at FKP UNUD. The opening ceremony on September 7, 2024, at Batur Hall, Samudra Building FKP UNUD, was attended by Dr. I Wayan Astawa Karang, S.Si., M.Si., Vice Dean III of the Faculty of Marine and Fisheries at Udayana University; Dr. Abdurrahman Assyakur, S.P, M.Si., HIMASILA's faculty advisor; I Wayan Darya Kartika, S.Pi., M.Si., advisor for the Village Development and KBMI programs; and representatives from each student organization, along with the new Marine Science students of FKP UNUD 2024.

In her opening remarks, event chairperson Galuh Maheswari expressed the hope that through Neptune's 2024, new Marine Science students would grow into the next generation dedicated to advancing and committing themselves to the ocean, as reflected in the program’s theme. "Through Neptune’s 2024, we hope Marine Science students better understand their role for the ocean and dedicate themselves to protecting it," she said. This was followed by the first lecture, delivered by Dr. I Wayan Gede Astawa Karang, on “The Role of the Marine Sector in Regional Development and Indonesia’s Economy,” and the second by Mr. Putu Satya Pratama Atmaja, S.Kel., M.Si., on “The Importance of Discipline and Leadership in Organizations.”

On the second day of the first week, September 8, 2024, the students participated in a Mangrove Clean-Up and planting activity as part of the SCMTK program at Kampoeng Kepiting. On the third day, the second week, September 14, 2024, the program continued in Room 2.2, Baronang Building, FKP UNUD, with a Sharing with HIMASILA session and introductions with upperclassmen from the 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 cohorts. On the fourth day, the second week, September 15, 2024, the students were introduced to and practiced coral transplantation as part of SCMTK activities at Pandawa Beach.

On the fifth day, the third week, September 21, 2024, Marine Science freshmen attended a logo assembly to choose their cohort logo, fostering teamwork and camaraderie. This was held in Room 2.2, Baronang Building, FKP UNUD. The final activity was a joint worship session at Puja Mandala on the sixth day of the third week, September 22, 2024, where new students gathered for a communal prayer. Following this, students returned to the FKP UNUD campus for the closing ceremony, which included removing nametags, pinning ceremony, and a flag-kissing ritual by the new Marine Science students of the Faculty of Marine and Fisheries, Udayana University 2024. This program is expected to continue in the future to train and teach various skills and disciplines, equipping new students with enhanced abilities and knowledge.
