Increasing Youth Awareness of Issues in Aquatic Environments through the Ocean Scientific Essay Competition (OSEC)

In relation to the work program of the Student Executive Board (BEM) of the Faculty of Marine and Fisheries at Udayana University for the 2024 term, the Ocean Scientific Essay Competition (OSEC) was held as a national scientific writing competition with the theme "The Role of Young Innovators in Enhancing Potential and Global Competitiveness towards Indonesia as a Global Maritime Hub." This competition aims to develop participants' potential and skills, allowing them to convey their ideas in scientific essays on marine and fisheries topics. It also aims to foster a sense of awareness and responsibility regarding the importance of protecting Indonesia's seas.
The Ocean Scientific Essay Competition (OSEC) took place on Thursday, October 24, 2024, in the Batur Hall, Samudera Building, Faculty of Marine and Fisheries, Udayana University. The event was opened with a welcoming speech from the Chair of the Committee, Ni Ketut Cenik Ririn Pramiswari, followed by a speech from the President of the Student Executive Board, I Gede Kaivalya Bhanu Varistha, and an official opening by the Dean of the Faculty of Marine and Fisheries, Prof. Dr. Ir. I Wayan Nuarsa, M.Si. "It is hoped that the Ocean Scientific Essay Competition at Udayana University in the marine and fisheries field will run smoothly and provide maximum benefit to us," he stated.
Participants included active students from the Faculty of Marine and Fisheries at Udayana University, Bali International University, and Bali State Polytechnic, along with junior and high school students from across the country, including SMP Negeri 4 Kuta Selatan, SMP Negeri 10 Denpasar, SMA Negeri 1 Tabanan, SMA Negeri 1 Surakarta, and SMA Negeri 2 Abiansemal. The competition had a total of 28 participants, organized into 13 groups across two categories: High School (7 groups) and College (6 groups). Participants presented their material before a panel of judges, followed by a Q&A session. The competition was held in a hybrid format, allowing participants unable to attend in person to present via Zoom.
In the High School category, Putu Raina Nathania from SMA Negeri 1 Tabanan took first place, while in the College category, the top prize went to Putu Wicahyani Permadiasti, an active student from Udayana University. Certificates and plaques were awarded to the winners during the closing event of Marfish Week Fkphoria. Amos Jogi Siahaan, who won second place in the High School category, remarked that the competition broadened his perspective and provided a platform for creating innovations to solve marine and fisheries issues: "This competition made me search for more information related to marine and fisheries, learning about current issues, and finding solutions to address them."
The event ran smoothly and successfully, with the hope that this competition will serve as a platform for young innovators to develop ideas and insights on marine issues in the form of essays.
