Multi-Stakeholder Collaboration Establishes an Integrated Database for Bali’s Marine and Fisheries Sector
Jimbaran, Bali — The Faculty of Marine Science and Fisheries (FKP), Udayana University, has taken a strategic initiative for the future of Bali’s marine and fisheries sector by organizing the Second Focus Group Discussion (FGD II) on October 9, 2025. The event brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including the Bali Provincial Marine and Fisheries Agency (DKP), BRIDA, port authorities, academics, and non-governmental organizations. Its primary goal was to foster multi-stakeholder collaboration to establish an integrated, sustainable, and inclusive marine and fisheries database system. The need for solid and synchronized data has become increasingly urgent in light of the government’s ambitious plan to develop new economic centers in Bali’s fisheries sector during the 2025–2029 period.
In his presentation, Ir. Putu Sumardiana, MP, Head of the Bali Provincial Marine and Fisheries Agency, outlined major infrastructure development plans, including the modernization of PPN Pengambengan into an international-standard Integrated Fishing Port and the development of modern fishing villages focusing on key commodities such as skipjack tuna in Seraya Timur, milkfish in Patas, Buleleng, and grouper in Candikusuma, Jembrana. However, FGD participants agreed that the success of these programs relies heavily on the availability of accurate and integrated data. The main challenges identified include fragmented data across institutions, lack of synchronization, and inconsistency in data formats. In addition, environmental issues such as degradation of coastal ecosystems (coral reefs and seagrass beds) and the threat of microplastic contamination in fishery products emerged as critical problems that require valid and reliable data for effective management.
The FGD produced several key agreements that marked a significant milestone. A large majority of participants (76%) expressed their willingness to share data, provided that clear mechanisms—such as formal requests and transparency regarding data usage—are established to ensure accountability. The highlight of the discussion was the agreement to establish the Bali Marine and Fisheries Communication Forum, which will serve as the main platform for collaboration among stakeholders.
As a reflection of the stakeholders’ trust, Dr. I Gede Hendrawan, S.Si., M.Si., from the Faculty of Marine Science and Fisheries, Udayana University, was appointed as the coordinator of the forum. This step reinforces FKP Udayana’s central role as a knowledge bridge and facilitator, guiding Bali’s marine and fisheries sector toward data-driven, sustainable, and community-oriented management.
