Udayana for the People: FKP Enhances PKK Skills in Lokapaksa Village through Fish Product Diversification

Buleleng, August 2, 2025 – The Faculty of Marine and Fisheries (FKP) at Udayana University continues to demonstrate its commitment to community empowerment through the Udayana for the People (PUM) Program, this time held in Lokapaksa Village, Seririt Subdistrict, Buleleng Regency. Carrying the theme “Empowering PKK in the Diversification of Fish-Based Products to Support Household Economic Improvement”, the program focused on enhancing the skills and economic capacity of local PKK women as key drivers of the community economy.

The event, held on Saturday, August 2, 2025, was attended by over 50 participants, including the Head of Lokapaksa Village Mr. Putu Dodik Tryana, village officials, members of the local PKK group, lecturers from the Faculty of Marine and Fisheries, and Community Service Program (KKN) students. In his opening remarks, the Village Head expressed full support for the initiative and hoped for its continuity, particularly in strengthening the village’s fisheries and marine sector potential.

The first session was delivered by Mr. I Wayan Darya Kartika, S.Pi., M.Si., who introduced the use of moringa leaves as a natural food coloring in fish-based products. He highlighted the economic potential of moringa, which grows abundantly in the village, if properly processed. Following that, Ms. Ade Rizky Sartika, S.Pd., conducted a practical training session on producing fish-based products such as fish balls, nuggets, tofu, and panada. The training was designed using simple technology that could easily be adopted by local PKK members in their daily lives.

Participants showed high enthusiasm, especially during the hands-on demonstration sessions. The women actively learned how to process local fish into healthy and economically valuable products—not only to meet their families' nutritional needs, especially for children—but also to generate additional income through home-based businesses.

Beyond technical training, the program also included brand development and product marketing enhancement. The team assisted participants in creating brand identities, attractive packaging designs, and digital marketing strategies through social media and participation in local exhibitions. To ensure program sustainability, the team outlined a long-term mentoring plan that includes access to capital, business monitoring, and regular evaluations to ensure lasting impact.

Through this initiative, it is expected that women-led fish product businesses will emerge, improving household income while strengthening the role of women as empowered and independent economic actors. The Udayana for the People program in Lokapaksa Village serves as a strategic step toward optimizing fisheries resources and promoting inclusive and sustainable rural economic growth.
