The third series of activities to enliven the 12th Anniversary of the Aquatic Resources Management Study Program, Faculty of Marine and Fisheries, Udayana University — also known as UTSA DVASA — was the Hasta Karya (handicraft) competition, held on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at Batur Hall 4.5, Samudra Building, Faculty of Marine and Fisheries. Creativity and environmental awareness merged in this handicraft competition. Four teams participated, showcasing innovative works that transformed fisheries waste into functional and artistic products.
One of the participants, Stella Farica Situmorang, stated in an interview, “As fisheries students, we are aware that our waters are heavily polluted with both organic and non-organic waste. We collected the waste we used for this competition ourselves from Kedonganan Beach.” Meanwhile, one of the judges, Mrs. Suprabadevi Ayumayasari Saraswati, S.Kel., M.Si., commented, “Hopefully in the future, more creations like this will emerge, and students will become aware of the abundance of natural materials that can be reused to enhance the economy.”
Each team was given one hour to prepare their creations. Afterward, they presented their handicrafts to the judges and audience. The first team, Vinasea, crafted an artwork inspired by the angler fish that recently surfaced. The second team, Eternera, created a two-in-one themed piece that served both as decoration and as an ashtray holder. The third team, Arnawa, made a handbag from plastic cup waste and hair clips from fish scales. Lastly, SMP Bintang Mandiri crafted a hanging lamp ornament using materials collected from Kedonganan Beach, integrated with technology that allows the lamp to be turned on using a clap sensor instead of a switch.
Through this Hasta Karya competition, it is hoped that students become more aware of the importance of utilizing fisheries waste as a valuable raw material, and that they are inspired to create further innovative works contributing to environmental preservation and sustainable economic development.
