Facilitating Students with an Interest in SCUBA Diving, BASIC Udayana Collaborates with Bharuna Diving School FKP UNUD to Organize Open Water Diver Certification
The Open Water Diver certification is a SCUBA diving course designed for beginner divers, where participants are taught the basic skills required for open-water diving. BASIC Udayana has partnered with Bharuna Diving School (BDS) FKP UNUD, the only SCUBA diving school at Universitas Udayana. BDS is affiliated with Scuba Schools International Indonesia (SSI Indonesia), a non-profit organization that offers international SCUBA and Freediving training. This collaboration aims to provide the best international-standard SCUBA diving training.
The Open Water Diver certification course took place from June to November 2024 at the Faculty of Marine and Fisheries, Universitas Udayana, where participants attended theoretical classes on diving physics, diving procedures, and safety protocols. The practical sessions were conducted in the open waters of Jemeluk Beach, Amed, Karangasem, Bali. A total of 20 participants, including students and the general public, took part in the training. The training process was structured and clearly explained, starting with classroom theory and followed by practical dives guided by certified instructors from BDS.
The training fee was IDR 4,000,000 for students and IDR 4,800,000 for non-students. This fee covered full SCUBA gear, meals during the training, and accommodation, including transportation and lodging during field practice at Jemeluk Beach. This pricing structure benefits participants who do not own SCUBA equipment, enabling them to join the training without worrying about additional costs for gear, accommodation, or meals.
Gandhi Bintang Alhafsy, the Chairman of BASIC Udayana, explained, "The Open Water Diver certification is one of our key programs, managed by the Business Fundraising Division. Our goal is for BASIC Udayana to generate income for the sustainability of the organization, while also offering valuable training to Universitas Udayana's FKP students and BASIC members who want to obtain a diving license. With this training, we aim to provide the best learning experience for our participants."
The instructor and founder of Bharuna Diving School also expressed hope for the continued collaboration, saying, "We hope that the partnership between BDS and BASIC Udayana will continue, with more programs in the future. BDS is committed to providing the best SCUBA diving training."
The Open Water Diver certification has sparked an increased interest among FKP Universitas Udayana students in obtaining diving certifications. This certification is highly beneficial for future careers in marine science, as many underwater activities require individuals with certified diving licenses.
